  • Iyengar Yoga is a form of yoga developed over the past 75 years by B.K.S. Iyengar. His approach is deeply rooted in the traditional teachings of Patanjali’s eightfold path, which dates back more than 2,500 years. While it focuses on the physical practice of yoga, Iyengar believed that yoga is also an art, science, and philosophy that extends beyond the mat.

This method is designed to be accessible to people of all ages and body types. It emphasizes precision in alignment, timing, and the use of props, allowing students to safely explore poses and deepen their body awareness.

A distinguishing feature of Iyengar Yoga is its standardized system of instruction. Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers (CIYTs) undergo comprehensive training and assessments to ensure consistency and depth in their teaching. Only CIYTs can officially teach this method. Using props to aid in proper alignment for beginners while offering deeper extensions for advanced practitioners is a highlight of this method.

Progress in Iyengar Yoga is built gradually through careful instruction. Students are encouraged to develop not just physical strength and flexibility, but also mental clarity and inner calm, as they connect with deeper layers of their being.

Whether you're new to yoga or have practiced for years, Iyengar Yoga offers a lifelong practice that promotes well-being on all levels.

  • All yoga that involves the body falls under the umbrella of Hatha Yoga, much like all ice cream is still ice cream. Within this category, there are different styles, each with unique characteristics and benefits.

Most Hatha Yoga classes focus on gentle, classical postures. Vinyasa Yoga, on the other hand, is defined by its use of music and a smooth transition between poses, creating a flowing practice. Ashtanga Yoga takes this a step further with a more dynamic flow, incorporating jumps between postures.

Iyengar Yoga, taught by Barbara, emphasizes precise alignment and holding postures without music or a flowing sequence. This focus on alignment helps deepen your practice and enhances body awareness. Each style offers its own flavor, allowing you to find what resonates best with you!

  • Just bring yourself and some clean, bare feet! If you're wearing long, baggy pants, you might want to roll them up so the instructor can see your leg movements. Yoga mats and all necessary props are provided and always available for free use in class. We look forward to seeing you!

  • Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of class. You can park in our big private lot next door. Use this time to get your props, go to the bathroom, and settle into your spot. Some students like to meditate before class, so please keep your voices low to get into the reflective yogic mood.

  • At this point in the pandemic we have no restrictions. Personal mask wearing is always encouraged if you have a medical condition you need to protect. Students who have had Covid or have a family member with Covid must test negative for two consecutive days before returning to class. We run two Blueair purifiers 24/7. Their proprietary HEPASilent technology combines electrostatic and mechanical filtration to capture at least 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.1 micron in size. We also have a carbon dioxide monitor, to measure how much we are breathing each other’s air, an air extraction filter, two wall fans, and six open windows. Mats and high-touch surfaces are wiped down with Clorox wipes or disinfectant after every class.

  • We believe in a sensible yoga temperature. The studio is kept around 72-76 degrees depending on what is being taught. There is a window air conditioner which keeps the humidity down in the summer.

  • If you have prior yoga experience or cannot make the Fundamentals of Iyengar Yoga Course, you might find that the open-level classes are more to your liking. However, these classes do tend to move faster and have less individualized attention, so we highly recommend starting with the Fundamentals Course Level I.

  • Yes, please! Drop-in classes tend to fill up! We limit the number of students to 20, so that everyone is seen and has space to work. Restorative Yoga is limited to 12 in-studio because of the large number of blankets and bolsters used. We can plan our teaching better if we know who is attending in advance.

  • This answer is a qualified “maybe.” It depends on many things: Is it normal aches and pains hurt - then “YES!” Yoga might make it feel better. Big injury/car accident hurt - probably not. A private session or rest might be a safer way to work. Contact Barbara for more details.

  • Everything changed after the pandemic. Barbara decided to teach Level I & Level II only as as course in order to let the students progress systematically. We hope more teachers will take advantage of our beautiful studio and teach here again soon. Jump on the email list for notification when that happens.

  • Absolutely! Kids and teens are welcome to join our classes. However, it's important to consider if they can follow instructions and stay engaged throughout the session. Children with experience in dance or martial arts usually adapt well. Keep in mind that the final relaxation period may be challenging for some, and it’s essential that they don’t disrupt the class. You know your child best—feel free to bring them along!

  • It depends. In Restorative Yoga class we hold the asanas — supported by bolsters and chairs — a LONG time. So if you are not used to staying in one position because of back pain, you might need to get stronger first. Give Barbara a call and ask her about it.

  • We are unable to offer refunds on class cards, workshops, and other class pricing options, but in certain cases we may provide studio credit. If you sign up for a Fundamentals Course and break a bone or get Covid you will receive a credit on your account.

  • Our class card packages are some of the most generous out there. A single class purchased is good for one month, 5 Class Card packages are good for 6 months, 10 Class Card packages are good for one year. Please buy what you think you will use. We may sometimes provide extensions determined on a case-by-case basis.

  • If you are interested in teaching here, please attend at least three of Barbara’s Sunday General Level Iyengar Class so she can assess your practice. You will then need to prepare a 20-minute audition class to see if you are a good fit for the studio. Guest teachers rent the studio by the month, must have yoga teacher liability insurance, be responsible for their own class registration, collection of payments, and marketing. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, please email and tell us about yourself and your teaching!

  • Although Barbara does not teach these herself anymore, we have a list of highly qualified local yoga teachers who would love to come to your AirBnB and teach you! Or you can book your group in at the studio itself. Please email the details at least two months in advance so we can work up a quote and recommend some teachers. If you chose to do it at your location, we can bring props to you.

  • Absolutely! We have hosted important birthday parties, dance parties, kids classes, sound baths, meditation workshops, art workshops, Indian dance performances, Indian music concerts, singing workshops, and AA meetings. The event must align with the studio’s yoga philosophy and be alcohol, drug, and smoke free. You might be required to hold liability insurance depending on your event. Email your details to us and we can talk.

  • Barbara is committed to maintaining respectful relationships with all students. She recognizes that you may engage her support for matters that are personal and considered confidential. Information shared with Barbara during your classes is considered confidential. You may give written permission for Barbara to speak to your doctor, physical therapist, or other health care provider. As a yoga teacher and therapist, Barbara does not work under HIPPA, yet she is willing to sign one for your other healthcare providers. This gives them permission to speak to her. If you are working with Barbara, she will not identify you as a private client when you are taking public yoga classes. Barbara will also maintain your confidentiality in her communication with other students and practitioners in the community.

  • YES! Barbara has experience and knowledge on what is safe to do in all three trimesters of your pregnancy. Each trimester has different considerations. She has taught yogis up to the day before giving birth. Almost having them give birth in class! Allison has a teenage daughter of her own and practiced during her own pregnancy. There will be some things that you won’t be able to do, but yoga in general is a boon to women.

  • During yoga, we aim to maintain focus and energy, and many students tend to sip water when they feel bored, distracted, or anxious. You can live for three days* without water! Water bottles can become a distraction, both for you and for the instructor.

Additionally, traditional hatha yoga teachings recommend not eating or drinking within two hours of practice to help the body maintain its pranic balance. Most importantly in yoga science we are trying to raise our body’s prana and kundalini upward. By putting water in your stomach, you are dragging your prana down to digest it. If you find yourself needing a sip during class, there’s a water cooler in the coat room for that purpose. Thank you for understanding!
